March is here, and that means it’s time to celebrate National Nutrition Month®! This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us,” is all about how food brings people together.
Food is much more than just a source of nourishment, it connects all of us regardless of background, religion, culture, or language. Food can help us feel connected whether it is reminiscing on a memory of a family gathering, volunteering at UGAGarden or Campus Kitchen, experiencing a new cuisine, or grabbing lunch with a friend at the Dining Commons between classes.
Whether you’re grabbing a bite between classes or sharing a meal with friends, food is at the heart of college life and connects all of us. Here’s how UGA Dining is highlighting that this March.
Taste of Home: Bringing Comfort Food to Campus
One of the best ways food connects us is through the flavors and meals we grew up with. That’s why UGA Dining’s Taste of Home Event is such a big deal!
Every year, students get the chance to submit their favorite family recipes, and our chefs bring them to life in the dining commons in March. Whether it’s your grandma’s famous mac-n-cheese or a beloved dish from your hometown, Taste of Home helps bring a little piece of home to Athens.
It’s a perfect way to celebrate this year’s theme—because no matter where we come from, food can connect us to our families, traditions, and each other.
Special Events & Chef-Curated Experiences
Food nourishes both our bodies and our experiences—it’s a way to fuel our day and create meaningful connections. That’s why UGA Dining hosts special events and chef-curated meals throughout the year to bring students together over delicious, thoughtfully crafted dishes.
From themed dinners highlighting global cuisines to nutrition-focused events that showcase nutrition basics, these experiences create opportunities to learn, explore, and connect in a fun way. Whether it’s a seasonal feast, a pop-up tasting event, or a unique chef-led menu, these gatherings celebrate how food brings us together.
Fueling Your College Life, Your Way
We know that food choices look different for everyone, and UGA Dining is here to support options that fit your lifestyle, schedule, and needs. Eating a variety of foods that you enjoy and that fit your needs can help you feel your best, stay energized, and powered throughout your day.
That’s why we offer nutrition resources and support, including access to Registered Dietitians, to help you make informed choices that work for you. Whether you’re looking for quick, balanced meals, navigating food allergies, or simply exploring new options, we’ve got you covered. Learn more about our nutrition services here.
Taste the World Without Leaving Campus
At UGA, we’re proud of our diverse student body—and we celebrate that diversity through our food. Whether you’re craving something from your home country or just want to try something new, you’ll find options from all over the world.
From spicy curry to sweet treats, our menus reflect students’ different cultures and tastes. So go ahead, try something new—it’s all part of how food connects us.
Collaborating with Pollinators: Enhancing Campus Biodiversity
At UGA, we recognize that the journey of our food begins long before it reaches our plates, with pollinators playing a crucial role in our food systems. UGA Dining collaborates with various campus initiatives to support and protect these vital species.
Our campus is certified as a Bee Campus USA by the Xerces Society, reflecting our commitment to fostering healthy pollinator habitats through interdisciplinary research, education, outreach, and sustainable campus operations. Look for bee pollination stickers in the dining commons this April during Earth Week to see which foods require pollination.
Final Thoughts: Let’s Connect Over Food
At UGA, food is so much more than just something we eat—it’s a way to connect with each other, our cultures, and our health. This National Nutrition Month let’s embrace the power of food to bring us together.
Food connects us all, whether you’re sharing a meal with a friend, trying something new, or fueling your next study session with nourishing choices.
Try out a new recipe and cook it with your family and friends. Grab lunch with a friend in the dining commons. However, you choose to celebrate, let food be a way to create memories, build community, and nourish both body and soul.
